The Masters:  Joshua Bell

March 26, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Joshua Bell, violin

“Bell's tone breathes and lingers like a human voice.” – San Francisco Chronicle

For more than two decades, Joshua Bell has been captivating audiences worldwide with his poetic musicality. He came to national attention at the age of 14 in a highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. A Carnegie Hall debut, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and a recording contract further confirmed his unique presence in the music world. Now in his thirties, Bell’s career is exceptionally varied. He is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader, and his restless curiosity and multifaceted musical interests have taken him in exciting new directions, forging a unique career that has earned him the rare title of “classical music superstar.”

He has appeared in the most amazingly different places:  from Sesame Street to the soundtrack for "The Red Violin" to People Magazine's list of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world.  He's even performed in the Washington DC Metro as part of an experiement with
the Washington Post to see what would happen if a world-class musician took on the role of "street musician."  (click here to read the article)

Looking forward to Bell's appearance with the ASO, Music Director David Itkin commented, "Josh and I were at school together, and we've been trying to perform together for years. It has finally worked out, much to our delight.  This will be one of those evenings not to be missed."  Bell will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and the ASO will perform Mozart Symphony No. 39 and Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin.

“Pure Bliss” – Associated Press

“The American violinist with movie-star good looks has emerged as one of the finest musicians of his generation, whose interpretations can be seriously set beside and favorably compared to players twice his age. Dead players too.” – The Washington Post

Classical Mystery Tour

April 22, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Imagine The Beatles playing in concert with a symphony orchestra. What would that have sounded like? Find out for yourself when Classical Mystery Tour - a tribute to The Beatles, featuring original members of the Broadway sensation "BEATLEMANIA," performs live in concert with the ASO. The Fab Four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents some 20 Beatles tunes sung, played, and performed exactly as they were written. Hear "Penny Lane" with a live trumpet section; experience the beauty of "Yesterday" with an acoustic guitar and string quartet; enjoy the rock/classical blend on the hard edged "I Am the Walrus." From early Beatles music on through the solo years, Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles like you've never heard them: totally live.

“More than just an incredible simulation” -- Los Angeles Times

“Never has the music of The Beatles sounded as good as this night with the live orchestra” – Newport News
