Your Program Experience
Anna Clyne - Night Ferry
The experience: chaotic, intense, whirlwind of emotions
Night Ferry proves to be an ambitious, absorbing score, filled with music of great color, vitality, and expression. According to Clyne’s note on the piece, the music depicts two main ideas: voyaging and the extremes of manic depression. She had inspiration from composer Franz Schubert who suffered from a type of mood disorder. Additionally, the title of the piece is from the Irish poet Seamus Heaney's Elegy for the author Robert Lowell, who also suffered from manic depression. This work will truly put you on a journey full of many ups and downs.
Gustav Holst - The Planets
The experience: adventurous, enchanting, vibrant
The Planets is one of the most recognizable symphonies you may hear. Many movies based in outer space used Holst’s work as inspiration, such as John Williams’ score of Star Wars. This seven-movement work sets the scene for visiting every planet along our solar system.
